Right now, there are so many things going on "behind the scenes" that I sometimes feel like I am turning in circles. I apologize for the lack of consistent updates recently, but my computer has been "fixed" which means that it is now limping along and is so frustrating to use as it has to be closed down and restarted way too often. Since I know absolutely nothing about the inner workings of computers, I am simply waiting for this one to die and then I can turn on a new one.

MWDTSA is in the process of planning some events, including a new event in Nebraska so am excited to see how that moves along. To coordinate these events, it requires a lot of online communication with various military installations and supporters. Photos will be posted later online and in the our upcoming newsletters.

This afternoon I have a presentation to give at an elementary school in the Atlanta area and will be looking forward to debuting my new Power Point Presentation to see what questions it prompts from the young ones.

I can tell you that we have an awesome newsletter that is being readied for distribution towards the end of the month. This is one you will not want to miss.

And, lastly, a shout out to so many of the handlers that we've supported who are now ex-military. We love that you haven't lost contact with us and thank you for your service. Shown above is now-retired Anty, with his Dad, Rob. They are both enjoying post-deployment life.

Duck, Duck, Goose??

We received a box this morning from Loving Pets Corporation filled with small, pocket sized samples of an array of meat sticks to share with our Military Working Dogs. There are a variety of flavors (lamb, beef, chicken, pork and.....duck- but no goose) all in very colorful packaging, which showcases their mascot, Liberty.

Inventory Time

Sometimes it seems like I spend half of my time counting things. How many of these do we have on hand? How many of that item will we need? Without a doubt, the one item that we go through like gangbusters is the "KONG". All of these KONGs? GONE by mid-year last year. Some very happy, happy dogs received these KONGs earlier last year and, of course, the newer KONGs that were solicited during our KONGs for K9 drive in 2011 are now gone, too. The dogs love the chewing opportunities provided to them by the rugged KONG and it helps both to keep a dog busy and to relieve stress and tension that dogs in transition or in a battlefield can feel.

As we head into spring, we will soon have an updated version of our Wish List up and available for view. Chan Follen is the Member at Large whose responsibility includes designing the care packages. She has decided to work towards items that are helpful for "Fun in the Sun." We haven't finalized all of these items that we are hoping to include in our next Care Packages, but you can rest assured, that some form of KONG toy will, no doubt, be on that list.

Thanks to the KONG company for their ever present support. And, to the dogs for their sincere and robust usage of what we deliver to them, KONG-wise.

So far I have received two packages from your organization. I wanted to emailyou sooner but I have been really busy and kept forgetting to until I gotanother package the other day in the mail. I wanted to thank you very much forsending the things you have sent. I took a few pictures of my dog, Astra,playing with some of her new toys, but can't upload them (yet). She hasn't left them alone yet, unless she's asleepand even then she falls asleep with them in her mouth or right next to her onher own bed. I sent an email to Krista; she sent a letter in the packageyou sent to us. I wasn't sure if it was a young girl or what so I emailed herthanking her for that and sent her the same pics I am sending you.

Celebrating our 20,000th visit to our website

This morning I was greeted with wonderful news as I checked our Website; we have been visited over 20,000 times at mwdtsa.org. This journey has been overwhelming in both time and energy. But it is important for me, as I feel that it is important for our visitors, to recognize and honor the work that is done each and every day around the world by thousands of dogs and handlers.

While I have met many wonderful Korean and Vietnam veterans, awesome active duty handlers and dogs that are both happy and fulfilled, there are also sad times that we've been through. As we celebrate our continuing outreach today, I will share with you a photo of Arras, a dog that participated at our Governor's proclamation day in 2007. In September of that same year, Arras was lost in Iraq. MWDTSA assisted the kennels at Robins AFB to provide funding for a memorial shadow box for his handler and attended the memorial event at the base and mourned the loss of this great dog, Arras, who was Killed in Action.

Our missions, which include honor and recognition for dogs and handlers are important aspects
of MWDTSA. And so today, we are showcasing an old photo of a dog that was lost in service several years back; his legacy lives on.

Super Bowl In A Box sent

"Super Bowl in a Box" care packages were prepared and shipped today with the great assistance of my always wonderful better half. The core of each box was the Super Bowl theme. While we couldn't do dog jerseys for each MWD on our list, we did include the bandannas; we even had two different colors in case some of the recipients want to "team" up. We included one of three different types of KONG footballs, a melting gooey cheese with some Mt. Olive jalapenos, Community Coffee from our great partner in Louisiana and then packed the box full with other items like popcorn, other dog toys and treats. We hope our guys and gals will like these.

Thanks to all of the great people who made these possible: all of our supporting partners that sent in-kind products and all of the donors who sent items or money. While sending money may not be as much "fun" for the donor, it is absolutely crucial to getting our missions accomplished. After packing all morning long, I spent almost an hour with my great postal partners at the Canton Post Office and got everything sent. This one set of boxes shipped cost us $685 - in postage alone. Most boxes, like the one shown, are sent to individuals, but we do send larger boxes when we have an entire kennel that has asked for support, which saves us a little on postage. Today we sent for 61 personnel and 59 dogs.

And, our thoughts are already on the NEXT set of care packages. Our wonderful care package coordinator, Chan, is requesting items for her "Fun in the Sun" packages. If you'd like to be part of this great mission, please consider making a donation. We are planning on several items: doggles, collapsible water bowls, KONG flyers, doggy wipes and more. We certainly can use your help!

When God Winks

I have often spoken of the numerous coincidences that I've encountered on my journey with MWDTSA. So powerful were some of them that recalling them while driving, I actually had to pull off while regaining composure. The right people I've met at "exactly" the right time, over and over and over again. One instance was when I was headed to Fort Benning many years ago, probably in 2001. I was headed down on Friday the 13th of July. I had gone down to Fort Benning the previous year for the dedication of the War Dog Memorial. As training director for my dog club, the reward for their participation was a trip to see the dogs at work, have lunch and see the memorial. As it turns out, the night before, someone gave me the phone number for the veteran dog trainer coordinating the memorial and, as they say, the rest is history.

These coincidences have become so familiar to me now that I have termed them as "Oh, Wow" moments.

Just had another one with a new supporter who met a dog in Europe some time back and couldn't remember the name. I sent a photo of two dogs and indeed, the dog she remembered was in the photo. I think I may have overwhelmed our new supporter. LOL. Welcome as a supporter, Kerri.

Anyway, she came back to me with a book that she had read entitled, When God Winks: How the Power of Coincidence Guides Your Life by Squire Rushnell. So now I have a new term for my "Oh, Wow" coincidence moments. I'll simply say I'm being winked at.

And, below is one of the photos that I have of the dog that she met, Zorby. This is a photo taken on Zorby's last deployment in Afghanistan. Zorby had a very special handler, Travis, who remains close to my heart. Eyes a twinkle, Travis, this is for you.

Power Point in Place

Our great website guru has been requesting a Power Point Presentation to include on our front page for a while. I remember some of the old vacation slide shows I've had to sit through so wanted this to be as short as possible, while still giving everyone a chance to see some amazing dogs and handlers. We've been doing this for over 10 years now so I have a treasure trove of photos and, unfortunately, am not able to include everyone or even all of the great photos that we have. I'm never sure where these concepts come from. I am divided about whether some Facebook user are misguided, misinformed or simply trying to pull the wool over people's eyes and get some kind of sympathy income as if they were a charity.....but let me be as clear as I know how to be. The Department of Defense does not randomly and routinely euthanize military working dogs once they reach the age of 7 or 8. I was forwarded a Cause today on Facebook which was one of those "what the heck" and "where did you dig this up" moments. The author of the Cause very generically stated that he wanted to stop the DoD from euthanizing military working dogs. Folks, it simply does not happen. I know so many dogs that have lived to 12 and 13, some still working and in great shape like Rico pictured above. I know many dogs that are waning in health, but are still cared for by their home kennels. It may be due to ignorance or self-serving, but either way, these folks are dead wrong and muck up the waters.

A Memorial to Zaniah C. Creamer

Sgt. Zainah C. Creamer, 28, is the first female dog handler to be killed in action since the U.S. Army started training womenas handlers in 1973. She was killed by an IED on Jan. 12, 2011, in KandaharProvince, Afghanistan. She was a handler with the 212th Military PoliceDetachment. A native of Texarkana, Texas, she had served two tours in Iraq. Herdog Jofa was not injured.

Rest in Peace, young Soldier.

John Douangdara Birthday Memorial

MWDTSA has been presenting a series of Memorial Pages to honor dog handlers who have been Killed in Action in either Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. We are taking a brief pause in our chronological postings for a couple of reasons. During the holidays, I wanted to focus on the positive things that our organization is doing for those who are working in harm's way - the care packages and the messages of support to the handlers that are working in the cold mountains of Afghanistan. And, secondly, we want to honor John Douangdara.

John Douangdara's loss, last August, would not make him the next handler in our memorial order, but we pause to celebrate his life today because this would have been his 27th birthday. His story is compelling and unique. At 5'5" and approximately 115 pounds, his was not the body type of the normal handler that we see. But, his way with animals, and particularly his military working dog partners was superior. He was, you see, the handler that was aboard the helicopter that crashed last August with the members of Seal Team Six. Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating the holiday. We have a photo of Mr. Boscoe to share. Despite the bitter "crazy, stupid cold" and reports of everything being frozen. "Let's see....Laundry...Frozen...Toilet...Frozen...Sinks...Frozen...Showers....Frozen....." Billy and Boscoe have the holiday spirit and send their thanks to everyone who helped make these holiday packages possible.

Some of 4th quarter holiday care packages that we sent to the dog handlers have arrived in country and we are beginning to hear back from the recipients. Included in the packages were KONG toys, T-shirts, coffee, snacks for handlers and dogs, pickles and a variety of other items. We asked for photos and here are a few as the handlers and their dogs pose for photos for MWDTSA. Dog handlers love to put something silly on their dog and take a photo! Some packages haven't arrived as yet and some addresses were just received so these packages will be heading down range over the next couple of weeks. We hope to receive more photos throughout the holiday season.

And, as a reminder, we will be sending care packages again to newly deployed handlers in mid-January, with the theme of Super Bowl in a Box. So, we still need funding to help us with those! A Memorial to Lance Cpl. William Crouse IV

Lance Cpl. William H. Crouse IV, 22, was killed in action Dec. 21, 2010, along with his detection dog Cane by an IED in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was from Woodruff, S.C., attached to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Regiment from Camp Lejeune, N.C. Reports were that even as he lay dying, Lance Cpl. Crouse demanded that his wounded dog be put into the Medevac helicopter with him. They were evacuated together, but both died.

A Memorial to Colton Rusk

Marine Pfc. Colton Rusk, 20, was shot on Dec. 6, 2010, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, I Marine Expeditionary Force based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif. A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, he was only six weeks into his first deployment. His dog, Eli, a black Laborador retriever, was not injured. Eli had crawled on top of Pfc. Rusk’s body during the firefight to shield him. The Defense Department allowed Pfc. Rusk’s family to adopt Eli.

Care Packages Headed for Afghanistan

We are halfway through the packing and shipping of Care Packages for 2011 - but only because we are still waiting to confirm addresses for half (OK, a bit more than half) of the handlers to whom we plan to ship packages. Most of the packages are already done, just awaiting the paperwork.

Please enjoy the photos of our work in packing the boxes this year and the results of the boxes at a kennel a couple of years ago.

The packages this year are filled to overflowing with great stuff, donated by amazing American companies (See our list of Sponsors) or purchased with donated funds. I cannot imagine that these military working dogs won't be wagging their tails a wee bit faster on Christmas morning.

Enjoy the holiday with your family and friends. I am very excited that my cousin's son and his friend will be joining us for Thanksgiving from Fort Stewart, GA. While he's not a dog handler, he's been deployed and is home now so I'm thrilled. To all of our deployed handlers, please stay safe and enjoy some turkey when you can.

Today at the post office there were a couple of great surprises awaiting, one of which was a box from Hadley Middle School in Homer Glen, Illinois with great letters to the handlers and dogs inside. There were also some toys and treats.

We love receiving these to send and wanted to thank the students and, of course, the teacher who made it all possible. (Apparently, there is someone at Hadley Middle School that is as big a fan of glitter as I am! : ))

We will get these out in the next shipment and really appreciate your efforts!

A Memorial to James Ide

Staff Sgt. James R. Ide V, 32, was killed Aug. 29, 2010, near Hyderabad, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire. He was a specialized dog handler with the 230th Military Police Company, based in Sembach, Germany. He was a native of Festus, Mo. Sgt. Ide left a wife and two children. How can you help military dogs this season? We have some suggestions: donations are always a great way to go as they can be turned into anything from KONGs, to treats to the nearly $13 per box in shipping expenses. Do you have a contact at a company that could send us in-kind donations? WE LOVE to get items that are suitable to include in packages that we don't have to spend money to receive: dog treats or toys, socks, hand warmers, snacks, grooming supplies etc.
You can online shop via iGive.com and a portion of the purchases you were going to make anyway can be funneled to our organization. You can partner with your friends, family, church members or other organizations and do a small fundraiser.

However you choose to help military K9s for the holidays, we will be sending packages and you can assured that somewhere in the middle of the Afghanistan mountains, these teams will know that they are remembered and appreciated.

A Memorial to Max W. Donahue

Marine Cpl. Max W. Donahue, 23, was fatally wounded on Aug. 4, 2010, while supporting combat actions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He lost his battle for life on Aug. 7. A military policeman and dog handler, he was with the I Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was a native of Highlands Ranch, Colo. His dog Fenji was not injured. Cpl. A Memorial to Jeffrey Standfest

Cpl. Jeffrey R. Standfest, 23, was killed in action June 16, 2010, in an IED explosion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Cpl. Standfest was a dog handler with the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. Cpl. Standfest had recently suffered a concussion in an IED explosion that killed his first dog. He had returned to duty with a new dog looking for more IEDs when he and that dog were killed. He was a native of St. Clair, Mich.

A Memorial to Brandon Steffey

Spc. Brandon Steffey, 23, an Army tracker team dog handler, was killed with his dog Maci by a roadside bomb while riding in a vehicle on Oct. 25, 2009, in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 178th Military Police Detachment, 89th Military Police Brigade, III Corps, based at Ford Hood, Texas. He had previously served a combat tour as a gunner in Iraq. While other dogs detected IEDs, Maci specialized in tracking the terrorists who made the bombs. A native of Sault Ste Marie, Mich., Spc. Steffey left a wife and young daughter.

While there, he visited with employee Mandy Andree and checked out the items being requested for our dogs, including the KONGs, Solid Gold Shampoo and Conditioners, and grooming supplies.

I guess by now every regular reader of this blog knows that my home roots rest in Iowa. I have a connection with Iowa soil that only another Iowan truly can understand. We sang this song as children on our vacations out west, probably mistaken that folks from Wyoming, Nebraska or California might be jealous that Iowa (I-O-way) had such tall corn. This refrain still brings a smile to my face when I remember the row upon row of Iowa corn growing towards the sun in late August.
In my KONGs for K9s Mission, I reached out to a couple of stores for help with our project. The Iowa folks started a month early because my hubby was going to be up there and could bring back the early donations without having to worry about shipping. I was going to go out tonight to inventory what we had received, but there are so many, I'm going to have to clear out some more space before I can complete my inventory. What I am so proud of remains that support via this great store, Leash on Life, from eastern Iowans. Regular folks who want to make a difference.
I am highlighting a couple of the notes via photos that were written and more will probably follow. In the first photo, the message is "Come home soon." and it is sent as Iowa. In another note, Ozzie and Jada, two Iowa beagles thank the working dogs with a note that says "Thanks for all you do so we can enjoy playing in the backyard."
To our handlers, thank you for all you do. These KONGs will be included in the Christmas packages, from Iowa, with love. Please visit Leash On Life if you are in the Iowa City area. It is an amazing store and we would be delighted to send them a new customer or two.

Elite Dog Handler Honored at Camp Leatherneck

Staff St. Christopher Diaz. His dog was not involved in the incident.

Dino, Staff Sgt. Christopher Diaz’s military working dog, lies at the feet of Marine Corps dog handlers during Diaz’s memorial service at the Camp Leatherneck, Helmand province, chapel, Oct. 8. Diaz, a native of El Paso, Texas, and an expert military working dog handler with II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group (Forward), Task Force Belleau Wood, died Sept. 28, 2011, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. Diaz was deployed out of Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., where he served as a handler with III MHG

Looking for Hogs Not Dogs

Well, to be a bit more descriptive, we are looking for Pigs - in the form of piggy banks. As we head into the most active few weeks of our year, in terms of Care Packages sent, we are finding ourselves in need of money to both buy additional items for the care packages and to pay for their shipment.

This holiday season our in-kind product donations may be half of the value of a box being shipped. If we value the content of our care packages at an average of $100 - half donated goods and half purchased goods, we already have $50 in the box before it is shipped at a cost of $12.95, which for ease of math, I'll take the liberty of rounding up to $13.00 - for a total of approximately $63.

Our goal is to be able to send a box to at least 200 of the deployed dog teams with something special for them and their dogs, to let them know they are supported. You can see that ads up quickly and we can send only what we have; it is only with donations by individuals and organizations that we can make this happen. If you have not donated recently or if you are one of the lucky ones in this economy and have enough to share more, please consider doing so. We do need your help now. Thanks for you time.

One of MWDTSA's Board Members lives in the greater SLC area and we discovered on a trip to Hill AFB last year that some of the handlers that we supplied with previous Christmas packages (see photo) were from Hill AFB. Ma and Paw's seemed to be a really nice fit for our organization. Staff Sgt. Raphael A. Futrell, 26, died in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 25, 2009, from injuries suffered in a noncombat-related incident. He was serving as an explosives-detector dog handler on his first tour of duty in Iraq after serving a combat tour in Afghanistan. He was a member of the 13th Military Police Detachment, 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command based at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. Staff Sgt. Futrell was a native of South Carolina.

An Old Indian Legend

There is an old, old legend,
Of how it came to be,
That dog forsook the wild to dwell,
With folks like you and me.

Now man and beast they lived on,
A common bit of earth.
Each specie thought the other,
Of very little worth.

One day there was a rumble,
The earth began to quake,
It gave a mighty shudder,
And then began to break.

A crack began to widen,
Between the beasts and man.
Some watched the crevasse deepen,
But most just turned and ran.

Now the dog surveyed the distance,
And Man beheld it too.
Between them sprang a yearning,
A feeling strange and new.

Then each one begged the other
To make the fateful leap,
Yet each one dreaded jumping
A crack so wide and deep.

So Dog compelled his courage
And told Man he would try.
He eyed the fatal distance,
For if he failed, he'd die.

Then Dog prepared to jump across
His courage had decided.
That if he could but make the jump,
They'd no more be divided.

His muscles bunched beneath him;
His body left the ground.
The wind raced past his muzzle;
His heart began to pound.

His senses sought the purchase
Of land beneath his feet.
At last his forepaws met the ground.
His mission was complete!

NO! His hind feet have slipped and
He's falling off the side!
His gallant farewell look said,
"At least, New Friend, I tried."

With disbelieving glance, Man
Beheld his falling friend.
He wouldn't let it happen;

Then flesh smote air in searching,
And hand met paw and fur.
Then Man pulled Dog to safety
